I have been brainstorming my project for the past months, and trying to figure out what I want to do with my 2025-26 project this year. My idea is to find a more sustainable way to recycle fabrics. I initially wanted to find a way to completely dissolve the fabric at home, to make an easier, more accessible way to recycle fabric – I then realized that the idea of completely dissolving fabric is probably out of reach, so I looked into what is actually causing people to just throw out their fabric, rather than recycle it. I discovered that if there is even the slightest bit of polyester in an item of fabric – which nowadays there is – then it is not recyclable, meaning people just throw it out. After discovering this, I switched gears, focusing on a way to dissolve or separate the polyester in fabrics to make it easily recyclable and reusable, which is now my project.
A goal I have for the next few weeks is to really research this topic, and get myself invested in all of the information I am going to need for my project. By the end of the next weeks I want to be able to explain my project, with statistics and real information, to someone who knows nothing about the subject.
